Islamic Relief began working in Myanmar in 2008, helping vulnerable people in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. Our USD $1.2 million relief and recovery programme, which we completed the following year, reached more than 100,000 people from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and Muslim communities. Supporting local NGOs, we provided food, hygiene kits, shelters, and school furniture and supplies. Our livelihood projects helped families in Dedaye, Labutta, and Kyauktan townships to earn a living once more, and we also rebuilt schools and decontaminated water sources. In 2012, we helped about 100,000 Buddhists and Muslims as inter-communal violence swept Rakhine state. Our emergency response included food distribution, shelter, and installing wells, latrines and washrooms. We continue to assist displaced families living in Rakhine. In 2014, our programme includes providing food, shelter, and water and sanitation in collaboration with our local partner. We are also delivering a major livelihoods programme benefitting poor and vulnerable families in Rakhine, Kayin (Karen) and Mon states.
